La apuesta era la vida
· 1983

"La apuesta era la vida" is a detective mystery serial by George Sound, issue 45 of the *Doble Juego* collection published by Ediciones Ceres in Barcelona (1983).
Sports reporter Arlie Thompson receives an anonymous phone call directing him to Boulevard O'Neill, where he discovers his colleague John O'Sullivan murdered in a bloody apartment. Police Sergeant Pinkerton interrogates Thompson, noting a recent quarrel between them over a club hostess and warning him not to investigate. Thompson disregards this, and while retrieving a newspaper proof in the printing room, a printing press mysteriously activates, nearly killing him—clearly an attempted murder. Meanwhile, Thompson's girlfriend Angie, a photographer, is attacked by a massive bald man who beats her severely, warning Thompson to stop meddling in others' affairs. In the hospital, Angie pledges to help Thompson uncover the conspiracy. Thompson, nursing a gimlet, begins reviewing the events systematically.
