Doc Savage: "The Land of Terror" This Spanish-language pulp adventure by Kenneth Robeson (pseudonym of Lester Dent, 1933) features Doc Savage, the bronze-skinned polymath and adventurer, investigating the murder of his former chemistry mentor, Jerome Coffern. Coffern is killed by two rat-faced assassins using a mysterious air-pressure weapon that fires a corrosive, electrically-charged vapor capable of disintegrating matter—flesh, bone, concrete, and earth—leaving only Coffern's right hand and wristwatch (a gift from Doc). Doc observes the strange gray vapor from his car and discovers the gruesome remains. The narrative establishes Doc's exceptional abilities: multiple scientific expertise, superhuman strength and agility, a photographic memory, and martial arts mastery. It also introduces his five specialized companions: Monk (chemist), Ham (lawyer), Renny (engineer), Long Tom (electrical engineer), and Johnny (archaeologist-geologist). The story promises adventure to a prehistoric Thunder Island where the villain Kar controls the "Smoke of Eternity."
