Rogue for a Day by John Mack Stone *Detective Story Magazine*, Vol. 2, No. 5, March 5, 1916. This issue contains one novelette, two continued serials, and six short stories. The featured novelette, "Rogue for a Day" by John Mack Stone, concerns Roger Verbeck, a man who boasted he could catch a notorious criminal known as the Black Star—a master thief who has terrorized the city for months, leaving calling cards of tiny black stars at crime scenes. The Black Star, offended by Verbeck's boast, breaks into his apartment to prove his superiority by leaving the letter and stars while Verbeck sleeps. Verbeck and his valet Muggs capture the burglar, but Verbeck deliberately allows his escape to shadow the man and infiltrate the Black Star's gang. The continued serials are "The Crime Destroyer" by Frank Conley (part two) and "Death in Life" from the Nicholas Carter archives (part three). Six additional short stories follow, along with miscellaneous police anecdotes.
