Duke Straley, a wealthy New York millionaire who solves crimes in his leisure time, travels to New York with his associate Susana Cortiz, whom he recruits as his secretary. En route by airplane, they're intercepted in Chicago by John Kerbey, representing an unnamed company seeking to purchase land Susana inherited from her deceased uncle: a modest beachfront property near Barnegat Bay featuring only sandy dunes and an old boathouse. Kerbey initially offers ten thousand dollars; Susana's lawyers advised twenty thousand minimum. Through negotiation, Susana and Duke—aided by Duke's legal acumen and Susana's sharp wit—manipulate Kerbey into agreeing to fifty thousand dollars. The property's true value remains mysterious, suggesting deeper intrigue driving the company's interest.
