Fred Fearnot as an Actor; or, Fame Before the Footlights This January 1899 issue (No. 7) of *Fred Fearnot* presents an adventure serial by the author of "Handsome Harry." Fred Fearnot and his classmate Terry Olcott travel west by train to handle legal business in Iowa. In their railcar, they encounter a theatrical company en route to performances. After impressing the troupe with their excellent singing of "The Old Oaken Bucket," Fred demonstrates ventriloquism and comedic acting ability, including a humorous rendition of Hamlet's Soliloquy. Fred chats with actresses Nellie Traynor and Elsie Warner, while playing pranks on an inebriated actor using ventriloquism. The company's manager, impressed by Fred's theatrical talent and wit, offers both boys complimentary tickets to future performances.
