Fred Fearnot and the "Greenhorn": or, Fooled for Once in his Life
This issue (No. 251, September 25, 1903) of Frank Tousey's weekly magazine features "Fooled for Once in His Life" by Hal Standish, a serial adventure narrative. The story follows Fred Fearnot and Terry Olcott, who have recently returned from the West after Fearnot rescued Bettie Winslow from Sioux Indians. Fearnot's exploits and photograph—showing him in Indian dress with a scalp lock and eagle feathers—have generated widespread newspaper coverage. The text depicts Fearnot and Olcott's conversation as Fearnot decides to travel East to visit his sweetheart Evelyn despite the public sensation his appearance will create. The back matter advertises an extensive catalog of instructional booklets on subjects including mesmerism, palmistry, hypnotism, sports, fortune-telling, athletics, magic, mechanical arts, and letter-writing, all priced at ten cents or three for twenty-five cents.
