Fred Fearnot in Kaffir-Land; or, Hunting for the Lost Diamond
· March 2, 1900

This issue of "Work and Win" (No. 65, March 2, 1900) features the serial "Fred Fearnot in Kaffir-land; or, Hunting for the Best Diamond" by Hal Standish. The narrative follows Fred Fearnot and his companion Terry in South Africa during wartime, where they have assembled a military command with permission from Kruger. While searching near Kimberley during the Boer siege, they hear rumors of an enormous diamond—estimated at 800 to 1,500 carats in the rough—found by a miner and subsequently stolen, likely by Kaffirs who killed the discoverer with assegais. Fred and Terry resolve to locate the stone. The episode includes a skirmish when miners conflict with Kaffirs at a mine site; Fred's command intervenes to investigate. The magazine also advertises "Work and Win" clubs with membership medals, badges, and certificates featuring Fred Fearnot's and Evelyn Olcott's portraits.
