La Paree Stories, August 1936
Monte Carlo Widow by Jean Martel is a romantic drama set on the French Riviera. Dunham, a married American on his first vacation in years, becomes infatuated with a glamorous woman in black at the Monte Carlo casino, known only as "the Monte Carlo Widow." After she deliberately catches his attention and invites conversation on the hotel terrace, they retire to the American Bar for drinks. Learning she is Madame Lola Fevrier, a widow whose banker husband died in a mountain car accident two years prior, Dunham accompanies her back to their shared hotel. In her suite, he attempts seduction during a tense encounter, trying various romantic approaches—kisses, tender caresses—but she remains emotionally distant and unmoved, ultimately dismissing him. The story explores themes of desire, marital dissatisfaction, and the allure of exotic romance versus emotional connection.
