Magazine of Horror, Vol. 4, No. 1 (January 1968), featured fiction from established and emerging authors. The lead novelet, "The Red Witch" by Nictzin Dyalhis, reprints a celebrated Weird Tales piece from 1932 about scientist Randall Crone and his beloved Rhoda Day, who is haunted by a savage, skin-clad apparition—a possessive, one-armed Ice Age warrior. The supernatural menace intensifies as their romance develops, forcing Crone to confront the entity. Supporting stories include Mary Wilkins-Freeman's "The Wind in the Rose-Bush," Larry Eugene Meredith's "The Last Letter from Norman Underwood," Harriet Bennett's "The Jewels of Vishnu" (introduced by editor Sam Moskowitz), "Ground Afire" by Anna Hunger, "The Man from Cincinnati" by Holloway Horn, and Kirk Mashburn's novelet "The Last of Placide's Wife." Robert E. Howard contributed verse. Editor Robert A. W. Lowndes discusses pulp fiction craft and beginning writers.
