Beneath his authoritative military bearing, Devall is a scholarly man who doubts himself—a dichotomy that deepens when a blood-red sunset, interpreted by the Markins as a harbinger of conflict, disrupts his usual composure. The story examines cultural contact and the tension between military protocol and genuine understanding of alien perspectives. Brian W. Aldiss contributes "The Towers of San Ampa," John Kippax offers "Friday," and Donald Malcolm provides "The Stuff of Dreams." Lan Wright's serial "A Man Called Destiny" concludes this issue.
