This February 20, 1917 issue of *The Popular Magazine* contains eight fiction pieces spanning adventure, mystery, and Western genres. Featured stories include Roy Norton's complete novel "The Benevolent Liar," about a particular kind of well-intentioned deception; Victor Maxwell's novelette "Not a Chance in 10,000," centering on an alibi expert; and B. M. Bower's serial "Starr of the Desert" (part two), set in revolutionary New Mexico with a tenderfoot woman protagonist. Additional short stories include "Scorpion Stings" by J. Frank Davis about Colonel Buck Leonard, "Boritlaba's Honor" by Rowland Thomas featuring a Loree laborer's code of honor, and "Tang of Life" by Henry Herbert Knibbs about gunman Waring confronting past consequences. Roman Doubleday's mystery serial "The Green Tree Mystery" continues in its third installment, while Henry C. Rowland's "The Avenger of the Blood" (part two) treats primal passions conflicting with social conventions.
