This issue of *Scientific Detective* (June 1946) contains five crime and mystery stories of varying lengths. "The Silent Clue" by William G. Bogart follows San Francisco police officers Marty O'Keefe and Steve Lannigan investigating coordinated false alarms along the waterfront during World War II, uncovering a sabotage plot targeting the *Independence*, a freighter loaded with magnesium cargo. The narrative unfolds as Marty identifies the suspicious pattern, discovers an unauthorized visitor guarding watchman Sandy Nichols, and confronts potential saboteurs aboard the ship. The other stories include "A Bridle for Her Tongue" by Anna Nash Yarbrough involving an ancient torture device, "Strange Burglary" by Peter Levins concerning a Long Beach mystery, "Ring for Murder" by Ellis K. Baldwin featuring a science professor solving a murder, and "Poisoned Money" by Stuart Ellsworth about a man framed for murder by circumstantial evidence.
