*The Shadow on the Sea* by Max Pemberton (1907) is a mystery-adventure novel serialized across twenty-seven chapters. The narrator, a twenty-five-year-old orphan traveling with friends Roderick and his sixteen-year-old sister Mary, encounters Martin Hall—a mysterious eccentric christened "the Perfect Fool"—aboard a yacht at Cowes. During a train journey to Paris, Hall entrusts the narrator with sealed papers, cryptically requesting he open them should Hall die within three days, promising opportunities and dangers ahead. The narrative promises to unfold strange happenings at sea involving pursuits, mysterious ships, murders, and revelations, including encounters with Captain Black, a nameless vessel, and shadowy maritime intrigue spanning from London to arctic regions.
