This May 25, 1942 issue of *Short Stories* features adventure and action fiction for a wartime readership. The lead story is "Master of Dragons," a complete novel by E. Hoffmann Price about IL Jordan hunting Japanese operatives in Australian waters near Port Darwin, working with indigenous blackboys in the pearling trade off the Timor Sea. Also included is "The Zombie Chasers" by Robert R. Mill, concerning a naval officer's allergy to police; "The Devil's Master," a novelette by Caddo Cameron set in Mexico City involving a murder mystery; "Dead Reckoning" by Phil Richards featuring a murder mystery aboard a lifeboat from a torpedoed freighter; "Texas Trailers" (second installment) by William MacLeod Raine about range riders; and several shorter pieces including "The Coyote" verse by S. Omar Barker. Additional stories address wartime naval action, Atlantic convoy rescue, and Western scenarios. The issue reflects 1942 wartime preoccupations with military service and international espionage.
