This issue of *Short Stories* (May-August 1894, vol. XVI) is a 48-page literary magazine collecting tales from international sources. The featured story in this number is "This Jack and the Other" by Edgar Fawcett, a romantic/dramatic narrative about the artist Jack Griffith, his financially troubled cousin Jack in Rio Janeiro, and Griffith's complicated relationship with the wealthy widow Mrs. Rochester. The index lists approximately 40 stories including works by Kenneth Grahame ("The Argonauts"), Bret Harte ("Young Robin Gray"), Alphonse Daudet ("The Siege of Berlin"), Villiers de l'Isle-Adam ("Torture by Hope"), and others. Genres span mystery, adventure, historical fiction, and romance, with many translations from French and German originals. The magazine positions itself as offering "the best procurable in all the various languages."
