Anne Hereford This is Chapter IX of "Anne Hereford" by the author of *East Lynne*, serialized in *The Argosy* (April 1, 1868). Anne Hereford, a young gentlewoman now employed as a paid companion, travels to Chandos House with her employer Madame de Mellissie (formerly Emily), who visits her mother Lady Chandos after years of estrangement following a disapproved marriage. Upon arrival, Anne encounters Mr. Harry Chandos, the baronet's son, whom she recognizes from previous acquaintance. The narrative includes extensive architectural description of the sprawling estate with its sealed east wing and isolated grounds. Overhearing a private conversation between Lady Chandos and her son, Anne discovers the household harbors a dangerous secret they fear a stranger's presence might compromise—something they anticipate occurring "night by night," which has caused Lady Chandos severe anxiety and sleeplessness. The family reluctantly allows Anne to remain in the blue-room despite their reservations about her presence.
