Roland Yorke (a sequel to *The Channings*) This installment of Mrs. Henry Wood's serial features the investigation of a stolen forty-four-pound cheque taken from clerk Bede Greatorex's desk at his father's office. The elder Mr. Greatorex demands Detective Butterby trace the thief, suspecting one of the four clerks: Hurst, Jenner, Brown, or Roland Yorke. Bede, however, resists investigation and reveals privately to Butterby that he suspects Hurst while insisting the matter poses "awful danger" if disclosed to his father—he cannot explain without injuring others. Butterby, puzzled by Bede's cryptic reluctance and mysterious warnings, agrees to investigate discreetly. The chapter closes as Butterby visits the clerks' room, finding only Brown and Yorke present. Yorke, recently receiving joyful news of an expected visitor, treats Butterby unusually cordially.
