Ellen Adair departs for London to join her father, and Madam North extracts her promise to conceal her former identity as Mrs. Bohun. While Richard lies incapacitated, Madam orchestrates an exhumation of Mrs. Rane's grave despite Richard's known opposition. Coroner Dale reluctantly orders an inquest into the death. News spreads wildly; crowds flock to Dallory churchyard in unprecedented excitement. Jelly, who initiated the accusation against Dr. Rane, experiences remorse. Dr. Rane arrives at the grave and resolves to witness the proceedings despite warnings. When the coffin is finally opened before the assembled mob, it is discovered empty—a shocking development that confounds officials and provokes the crowd's angry speculation that Dr. Rane has sold the body for dissection.
