Gabriel's Appointment
This serialized novel (Chapter XIX) follows young artist Alice Kerr traveling to North Devon with her attendant Grace Pyne and courier Martin. Upon arrival at Highlevels, Mrs. Salisbury's estate, Alice receives a warm reception, though she struggles with melancholy about her past. Grace harbors private emotional turmoil, having rejected her suitor Darch Williams's proposal for a secret marriage and his mysterious allusions to obtaining Mr. Bruce's lucky charm.
Alice suffers from severe toothache upon arrival, confining her to rest. She discusses with Grace rumors of a mysterious figure pursuing Mr. Bruce, allegedly disguised and coughing suspiciously. Young Myra Salisbury visits to display her collection of gold coins to Alice, who becomes artistically inspired to paint Myra with her grandmother's jewels. Grace discreetly obtains camphorated chloroform from Dr. Nelson for Alice's relief.
