Believed drowned after a gambling-fueled crisis where he lost a tenant's money on Westminster Bridge, Robert was rescued by a tailor's employee and eventually emigrated, assuming everyone presumed him dead and guilty. Recognized in New Orleans by a Liverpool cotton broker's clerk, Robert returned to England to find Benjamin Dalrymple dying; the estranged relative made him heir to nearly half a million pounds. Robert arrives at Moat Grange to confront estate agent Pinnett's oppression of ejected tenants and resolve the debts plaguing his brother-in-law Oscar. The mounted constables have arrived to suppress labor unrest when Robert reveals himself, declaring the estate legally his and promising to rebuild demolished cottages and reinstate tenants. Pinnett, whose lease Robert invalidates, questions whether Robert is genuine or an impostor.
