The Village Blacksmith, by Darley Dale. October 1889 issue. Chapter XXVIII and XXIX of this serial novel concern Captain Arthur Raleigh's romantic entanglement and its complications. Reading of a jewel robbery at Woodford Rectory where Miss Vera Tempest is implicated in wounding a groom named Mark Brown, Raleigh abandons his plans to India, believing the charges false. He travels to France seeking Father Ambrose, learning that Vera—disguised as a Dominican nun—has sought refuge in a convent at Avranches. Raleigh resists breaking his promise to her father, delaying reunion three weeks. The narrative then shifts to Reuben the blacksmith learning from Mrs. Canter that Vera's sleepwalking from childhood explains her mysterious actions; crucial testimony from Rex is awaited for the magistrates' hearing.
