The Argosy, Vol. 58
This installment of T. W. Speight's serial "The Grey Monk" (Chapter XXX) concerns the aftermath of a servant's encounter with a mysterious hooded figure. Sir Gilbert Clare dismisses it as imagination fueled by family legend, attributing the sighting to a vagrant. Lady Pell receives news of her friend's grandson's death in France, potentially prolonging her stay. The narrative's turning point arrives when Ethel unexpectedly encounters Everard Lisle on the grounds—a man from her hometown of St. Oswyth's who had previously proposed to her. Their reunion stirs emotion in both. That evening, during Lisle's dinner visit, Sir Gilbert's grandson Luigi goes missing after leaving around ten in the morning. His absence troubles the baronet. The chapter concludes with Lisle departing into bad weather, puzzling over the young man's whereabouts.
