The Argosy, Vol. 63

This issue of *The Argosy* (June 1897) contains "Peace with Honour" by Sydney C. Grier, a serialized adventure narrative set in Ethiopia. The extract depicts Chapter XI: "The Ranks Are Thinned." British officials Stratford, Dick North, and Fitz Anstruther discover the doctor has died in apparent agony from poisoning, with the house looted. The doctor left notes indicating servants were involved, and suspicions fall on Fath-ud-Din. Sir Dugald, the mission chief, decides against openly accusing Fath-ud-Din despite strong circumstantial evidence, prioritizing the safety of four British women under their protection over revenge. He arranges a burial in the King's garden—the first Christian cemetery in Ethiopia—and the King issues a proclamation condemning the crime while shielding the likely perpetrator. The funeral procession includes Lady Haigh and Georgia.
