MALICIOUS FORTUNE By Stella M. Dürring This serial continues Chapter XVIII of "Malicious Fortune." Helen Thorneycroft attempts to meet with Mr. MacArthur to borrow money but is delayed. She encounters Major Carstairs, who provides funds and accompanies her to catch a train home. At her brother Philip's house, she reveals she has married Major Carstairs—a revelation shocking to Philip, who has been questioned by visitor Dickie Tiark about Helen's whereabouts the previous evening at Mrs. Dickinson's inn. A conflict arises between Helen and Philip over her reputation, which Helen indignantly defends. The next morning, Dickie eagerly seeks Helen to receive her gratitude for his "notable service," but finds her coldly dismissive and withdrawn. The issue opens with the poem "A Cry from the Town" by Sylvia Melsetter, a lyric contrasting urban anguish with natural peace.
