Munsey's Magazine, August 1895
· August 1895

This issue of Munsey's Magazine (August 1895) contains two primary features. The first is an illustrated article titled "Artists and Their Work," surveying contemporary American and European painters and their summer pursuits. It discusses prominent portraitists like Eastman Johnson and Charles Ayer Whipple, who painted Ex-President Harrison; notes the summer dispersal of leading artists to locations including Europe, Long Island, and rural retreats; and profiles Hubert Herkomer, an English portrait painter and Oxford professor who spent eleven years constructing and decorating his own residence in Bushey near London. The article includes reproductions of paintings and a humorous anecdote about painting a Korean general's portrait. The second feature is a biographical article on James Gordon Bennett, proprietor and editor of the New York Herald, emphasizing his management philosophy, generosity toward employees, and influence on American journalism despite his residence abroad.
