Munsey's Magazine, June 1903
June 1903 issue of Munsey's Magazine (Vol. XXIX, No. 3), a general-interest monthly. The cover article, "The Human Touch in Industry" by Robert A. Woods (head of Boston's South End House settlement), examines labor-employer relations. Woods argues that industrial conflict stems from lost personal connections between owners and workers, discussing profit-sharing systems at U.S. Steel, Pillsbury, Proctor & Gamble, and other firms. He contrasts the failed paternalism of Pullman, Illinois—which employees rejected despite amenities, leading to the famous 1894 strike—with the National Cash Register Company's Dayton, Ohio factory, which provides eight-hour days for women, bathing facilities, recreational clubs, and yard-beautification incentives without controlling workers' housing. Woods also references European models like the Krupp ironworks in Germany. Additional contents include fiction by Max Pemberton, Arthur E. McFarland, and Elliot Walker; illustrated articles on the Episcopal Church's sisterhoods and Ohio's history; and poetry by Kenneth Bruce and others.
