Munsey's Magazine, December 1915
· December 1915

This December 1915 issue of Munsey's Magazine features a nonfiction article surveying Dutch history. The article traces Holland's development from eleventh-century county status through Burgundian consolidation, Hapsburg rule, and Spanish dominion under Philip II. It covers the religious and political conditions that precipitated revolt against Spain—religious persecution, taxation, and violation of local privileges—and details Philip's dispatch of the Duke of Alva and the subsequent armed conflict. The piece emphasizes William the Silent, Count of Nassau-Dillenburg, whose house of Orange led the Dutch toward independence. Extensive period photographs document Amsterdam's architecture: the Royal Palace, canals, the Weigh-House, the Palace of Industry, and monuments to Rembrandt. An image of The Hague's Peace Palace notes Andrew Carnegie's American funding of the International Court of Arbitration.
