When Thumborg requests casting assistants locate fifty distinguished-looking young men, specifically "a blond and tall with dark-blue eyes" for a small part, Grover is recognized by a fellow extra as someone with connections. The narrative examines his frustrated ambitions and the competitive world of studio extras seeking stardom.
