The Cavalier, October 1908

This October 1908 issue of *The Cavalier* contains six serials including Robert Barr's "The Cleverness of Cardillac," Stanley J. Weyman's "The Wild Geese," John H. Whitson's "The Wings of Mars," and works by Albert Payson Terhune and Ludwig Lewisohn. The Barr serial opens with Victor de Cardillac, a young Gascon nobleman, arriving in Paris on the strength of a letter from the powerful court favorite Charles d'Albert of Luynes. Learning from a palace official that the letter was a joke—one of ninety-seven identical dismissals—Cardillac bristles with humiliation. The official urges him to establish himself through swordplay rather than patronage. The issue also includes ten short stories by authors including I. A. R. Wylie and Theodore Roberts, a complete novel "A Knight of To-Day" by Bannister Merwin, and poetry by Charles Hanson Towne and others.
