Catalog Note *Thrilling Adventures Among the Indians*, compiled by John Frost, LL.D., and published by J. W. Bradley (Philadelphia, 1851), collects numerous frontier narratives and incidents spanning approximately two centuries of Indian-settler conflicts in North America. The volume comprises over seventy discrete accounts—drawn from testimonies of sufferers, local histories, and national records—detailing border warfare, captivities, massacres, and encounters across Pennsylvania, Virginia, Kentucky, Texas, New Mexico, and other regions. Notable narratives include the 1785 attack on the Scott family in Virginia; the Ranger's adventure; escapades of mountain men including Kit Carson; the massacre at Taos and death of Governor Bent; and accounts of Indian tribal practices, hunts, and councils featuring Sioux, Comanche, Pawnee, and Creek peoples. The illustrations are by W. Croome and other artists. Frost's preface emphasizes the "striking and remarkable" character of frontier violence while arguing for Indian civilization rather than extinction.
