Museum Catalog Description *Adventures and Narratives of the Early American Frontier*, compiled by Warren Wildwood, Esq. (Philadelphia: J. Edwin Potter, 1862). A collection of action-oriented historical narratives spanning frontier conflicts and frontier figures. Contents include Indian encounters and warfare (McCulloch's Fearful Leap, Poe's encounter with Big Foot, Daniel Boone's adventures); sketches of frontier celebrities (David Crockett's bear hunts, Simon Kenton's exploits, Texas Ranger Colonel Jack Hays); Revolutionary War incidents (Sergeant Jasper, General Putnam); accounts of desperadoes and criminals (the Murrel gang, Black Dick lynching narrative, swamp robbers); rescue and escape narratives (prison ships, canoe adventures); and miscellaneous frontier perils (bear encounters, rattlesnakes, bombardment of Norfolk). The editor claims to have selected reliable accounts from various sources. The volume includes numerous wood-engraved illustrations accompanying key scenes in each narrative.
