Weird Tales

This volume presents a collection of six translated stories by E. T. W. Hoffmann, rendered into English by J. T. Bealby. The featured tales are: "Arthur's Hall," set in medieval Dantzic, following merchant Traugott, who becomes captivated by mysterious wall carvings and abandons his business duties to sketching, encountering supernatural figures; "The Doge and Dogess," concerning Venetian nobility; "Master Martin the Cooper," a craft-centered narrative; "Mademoiselle de Scuderi," a historical tale; "Gambler's Luck," exploring fortune and chance; and "Master Johannes Wacht." The stories blend Gothic and fantastic elements characteristic of Hoffmann's German Romantic style, featuring dreams, mysterious encounters, and the supernatural intruding upon ordinary commercial and domestic life. This 1885 London edition comprises the second of two volumes, limited to one thousand printed copies.
