The lead serial "The Devil-Ray" by Joel Martin Nichols, Jr. concerns a purple beam of light descending from clouds that brings death to whatever it touches. "The Ghosts of Steamboat Coulee" by Arthur J. Burks depicts dreadful happenings in a western gulch with bobcats howling as chorus. Seabury Quinn's "The Dead Hand" describes a bodiless hand floating through a window and seizing a millionaire by the throat. Other offerings include "The Silent Trees" by Frank Owen, "The Man Who Was Saved" by B. W. Sliney about a vast green monster rising from the Pacific, and "Bat's Belfry" by August W. Derleth involving a gruesome discovery in manor vaults. The issue reprints H. B. Marryat's "The Werewolf" and features poetry including work by Charles Baudelaire translated by Clark Ashton Smith.
