Buffalo Grass Scout by William F. Bragg Frontier scout Joe Conway, dressed in buckskin and trained by mountain men, tracks stolen ponies through Winter Kill Canyon in the Bighorn Mountains. He discovers a dead pony shot by horse thieves and bear-mauled remains. In a clearing, a wounded grizzly bear escapes from a rotting Indian trap and encounters a young white girl with blonde hair—the first white woman Conway has seen in the wilderness. Terrified but courageous, she draws a pistol. Conway, racing toward the bear on his pony with bow and arrow, shouts at her not to fire. The story concerns frontier survival, lost wildlife, Indian dispossession, and a dangerous rescue amid mountain predators.
