Work and Win No. 1209

This issue of *Work and Win* (No. 1209, February 3, 1922) features the story "Fred Fearnot and the Cowardly Boy," by Hal Standish. Fred Fearnot and Terry Olcott return to Fredonia from Kentucky and, finding their usual pursuits tame, travel to Sand Flats to bid on a woolen mill at auction. En route, they intervene when two rough youths mistreat an elderly woman being transported to an asylum, with Fred physically confronting the bullies. At Sand Flats depot, one tough challenges Fred to a fight. Fred accepts and enlists a local boy named Sam Bickford to hold their coats—discovering Sam is a chronic coward fearful of police intervention and physical danger. The ensuing fight depicts Fred's superior boxing technique as he defeats the physically larger thug, landing precise blows while his opponent employs crude rushes.
