Albert Yorke, 6th Earl of Hardwicke — 'Tommy Dodd'

Leslie Ward · Vanity Fair, 4 April 1901

Albert Yorke, 6th Earl of Hardwicke — 'Tommy Dodd'
Leslie Ward ('Spy') presents the 6th Earl of Hardwicke in three-quarter profile, cigarette at lip, one hand tucked into a dark frock coat, the other gripping a lapel — the posture of patrician ease that Ward perfected across hundreds of plates. The caption 'Tommy Dodd' is slang for an easy, lucky fellow, a wry commentary on inherited rank. The caricature is class-inflected rather than physiognomic, gently mocking the aristocratic idler. Hardwicke held minor court appointments under Victoria and Edward VII — consequence enough for inclusion among Vanity Fair's 'Men of the Day,' if not for lasting historical fame.
