Austen Henry Layard, Statesmen No. 30

Carlo Pellegrini ('Ape') renders the archaeologist and Liberal MP Sir Austen Henry Layard as a squat, top-hatted figure whose enormous white-bearded head dwarfs his body — the house caricature formula Pellegrini made famous. Layard wears a double-breasted frock coat and checked trousers, one hand tucked self-importantly at the waist. The caption — *'He combines the love of truths and art with equal devotion and success'* — salutes his twin careers: excavator of Nineveh and Assyrian antiquities, and Gladstonian politician. The exaggerated cranial mass was Pellegrini's standard device for intellectual men; no ethnic distortion is visible here. The plate ran as page 120, issue No. 43, in the magazine's early 'Statesmen' series, establishing the format that would define Victorian political portraiture for a generation.
