Douglas Hamilton McLean ('Ducker'), Men of the Day No. 679
Leslie Ward ('Spy') presents McLean in the relaxed uniform of the gentleman athlete: tan Norfolk-style jacket, knickerbockers, button-sided spats, blue cap and gloves, riding crop tucked under one arm and what appears to be a cigarette or small instrument in the other hand. The caption 'Ducker' is a colloquial Oxford term for the university swimming pool, signalling McLean's identity as an oarsman and aquatic sportsman rather than a political figure. The caricature is mild — Ward gently exaggerates the moustache and round spectacles. The plate flatters its subject as a breezy, well-dressed amateur, the late-Victorian ideal of muscular sportsmanship made fashionable by Oxbridge culture.
