Edmund Barton, 'Australia' — Vanity Fair, 1902
Leslie Ward ('Spy') captures Sir Edmund Barton — Australia's first Prime Minister — in the magazine's signature profile pose: a portly, silver-haired figure in a double-breasted frock coat, hands clasped behind his back, glancing sidelong with an air of comfortable authority. The caption reads simply *'Australia'*, equating him with the young Commonwealth he had steered to federation in 1901. Ward exaggerates Barton's considerable girth and prominent nose in the affectionate Spy manner. The plate appeared as Barton was consolidating federal institutions, and its caption reflects British engagement with the Dominion during this period of federation.
