George Beldam

Leslie Ward · February 1922

George Beldam
Signed SPY in the lower right, this chromolithograph portrait shows George Beldam — former Middlesex cricketer and pioneering sports photographer — rendered full-length in a dark three-piece suit, one hand on hip, the other raised with a ring visible on his finger. A small mustache and receding auburn hair individualize an otherwise dignified composition. Ward's late style here is restrained rather than grotesque: Beldam's frame is only mildly elongated, his expression self-possessed. The plate appeared as a supplement to *Mayfair* magazine, not *Vanity Fair* proper, reflecting Ward's continued commercial output after the original weekly ceased in 1914. No ethnic caricature is present. The portrait celebrates a gentleman-amateur who transformed how Edwardian audiences saw athletic motion through stop-action photography.
