John Frederick Bridge, 'Westminster Bridge'

Leslie Ward · Vanity Fair, 14 April 1904, chromolithograph by Leslie Ward ('Spy')

John Frederick Bridge, 'Westminster Bridge'
Ward's caricature of Sir John Frederick Bridge, organist of Westminster Abbey from 1882 and a pillar of late-Victorian musical establishment, plays on his surname with the caption 'Westminster Bridge.' The figure is rendered in profile, exaggeratedly portly and self-important in a dark checked suit, pince-nez perched on a bulbous nose, a card marked PEPYS tucked in his breast pocket — alluding to his work editing Pepys's musical manuscripts. He clutches a red-bound folio labelled Basso Continuo, signalling his scholarly credentials. The caricature carries no ethnic distortion; its comedy is entirely social, gently mocking institutional respectability and the well-fed confidence of an Edwardian musical grandee at the height of royal favour.
