Joseph Fletcher Green, 'Shipping'

Leslie Ward · Vanity Fair, 22 November 1890

Joseph Fletcher Green, 'Shipping'
Leslie Ward ('Spy') presents Green in the characteristic Vanity Fair formula: full-length profile, slight exaggeration of the nose and jaw stopping well short of grotesque, a dark three-piece suit with watch-chain, cigar held loosely in one gloved hand, the other resting on his hip. The caption 'Shipping' identifies him by trade rather than title. The accompanying text would have noted Green's early rugby distinction — England's inaugural international, 1871 — and his role in the family shipbuilding concern, locating him among the Victorian industrialists whose technical and sporting energy the magazine celebrated.
