'From the Army to the Church' — Dr. David Maclagan, Archbishop of York

Leslie Ward · Vanity Fair, 5 September 1891

'From the Army to the Church' — Dr. David Maclagan, Archbishop of York
Leslie Ward ('Spy') renders Archbishop David Maclagan in full clerical black — frock coat, apron, and white collar — with a Maltese Cross at his waist recalling his earlier military chaplaincy. The caption 'From the Army to the Church' anchors his unusual biography: Maclagan served as an army surgeon before ordination, eventually rising to York's archiepiscopal throne in 1891, the very year this plate appeared. Ward's caricature exaggerates the Archbishop's domed forehead, wire pince-nez, and compact, slightly pugnacious stance, conveying the no-nonsense bearing of a man shaped by barracks as much as by chancel. The composition is characteristic Spy: muted ground, exacting tailoring detail, and a subject caught mid-thought rather than posed for posterity.
