Lord Kitchener of Khartoum

Leslie Ward · Leslie Ward ('Spy'), published in Vanity Fair, 23 February 1899

Lord Kitchener of Khartoum
Ward's chromolithograph captures Herbert Kitchener at the zenith of his imperial celebrity, months after his victory at Omdurman secured British control of the Sudan. The figure is rendered in full evening dress — black tailcoat, white waistcoat and bow tie — with a broad red sash cutting diagonally across his chest and a star decoration at his breast pocket, signalling high honour rather than battlefield uniform. One hand rests behind his back; the other holds a pair of gloves. Ward exaggerates Kitchener's famously rigid, commanding posture and his prominent moustache, producing a man who appears more monument than person. The crown device in the upper corner marks his newly conferred barony.
