Edward O'Connor Terry

Leslie Ward · 1905

Edward O'Connor Terry
Spy (Leslie Ward) presents the actor-manager Edward O'Connor Terry in profile, dressed in a dark double-breasted frock coat with pince-nez perched on his nose, one hand tucked behind his back in a pose of comfortable self-possession. The caption beneath reads simply *Edward O'Connor Terry*. Terry had made his name in burlesque and comedy at the old Strand Theatre before founding Terry's Theatre on the Strand in 1887, where he ran respectable middle-class entertainments for two decades. Ward's caricature gently exaggerates his broad, reddish face and slightly stooped posture—the prosperous provincial impresario rather than the glamorous leading man.
