'Hereditary Actor' — Mr Henry Kemble

Leslie Ward · Leslie Ward ('Spy'), chromolithograph, Vanity Fair, 24 April 1907

'Hereditary Actor' — Mr Henry Kemble
The plate presents Henry Kemble — actor and scion of the great Kemble theatrical dynasty — rendered as a stout, self-satisfied gentleman in a black frock coat, pinstripe trousers, and a glossy top hat, gold watch-chain looping across his waistcoat. He leans on a cane with studied ease, one hand behind his back. The caption 'Hereditary Actor' is the entire argument: Ward flatters and needles simultaneously, implying that Kemble's stage career owes more to an illustrious surname than to exceptional talent. The caricature exaggerates his girth and florid complexion while dressing him impeccably — a joke about comfortable inheritance rather than earned distinction. No ethnic caricature is present; the comedy is purely one of class and nepotism within the Victorian theatrical establishment.
