'The Lord Mayor' — Reginald Hanson
Carlo Pellegrini · Vanity Fair, 13 November 1886

Signed Ape (Carlo Pellegrini), this chromolithograph caricatures Reginald Hanson, Lord Mayor of London, identified by the caption *'The Lord Mayor'* at the foot of the plate. Pellegrini renders him in profile facing left — the classic Vanity Fair pose — dressed in a dark frock coat with hands thrust into pockets, projecting comfortable civic authority. The heavy walrus moustache and ruddy, thickened nose are the caricaturist's chosen targets, exaggerating a prosperous, well-fed Guildhall solidity. A mayoral chain of office gleams at his chest, the sole mark of rank against otherwise plain suiting.
