Sir Robert Jardine

Leslie Ward · Vanity Fair, 23 August 1890

Sir Robert Jardine
Leslie Ward ('Spy') presents Sir Robert Jardine, Scottish MP and merchant, in characteristic side-profile caricature. The figure wears a tall silk top hat and dark frock coat, a cigar jutting from his lips trailing a curl of smoke—a shorthand for prosperous self-assurance. He grips an umbrella like a walking stick and carries a small leather satchel across one shoulder, suggesting a man of practical affairs rather than idle rank. Ward exaggerates the heavy jaw and jutting profile that were his signature tools. No ethnic caricature is present. The composition is squarely in Vanity Fair's 'Men of the Day' mode: the subject's wealth and commercial confidence rendered gently ridiculous without malice.
