Samuel Fay, 'Great Central'

Leslie Ward · Vanity Fair, 30 October 1907. Chromolithograph by Leslie Ward ('Spy').

Samuel Fay, 'Great Central'
Leslie Ward's plate shows Samuel Fay (1856–1953), American-born general manager of Britain's Great Central Railway, rendered in three-quarter profile facing right. He wears a dark frock coat over pinstriped trousers, a spotted bow-tie, and holds a smoking cigarette with one hand while the other rests in his pocket — the posture of easy authority. The caption reads *'Great Central.'* Ward gently inflates Fay's paunch and whiskers to signal prosperous managerial solidity. The image comments on American commercial energy within Britain's railway establishment.
