Hugh Pendexter's "Rifle Rule" begins a five-part serialized account of 1856 Kansas conflict between slavery and anti-slavery factions. John Webb's complete novelette "The Job" takes place on a tramp ship with morally questionable cargo. Arthur O. Friel concludes his four-part serial "The King of No Man's Land," set in Brazil. Edward Speyer's "Hi-Jack" depicts urban bootlegging violence. William Ashley Anderson's "The Elevation of an Emperor" is a complete novelette set in Africa involving murder. The issue also includes Michael J. Phillips's article "The Stage Goes By," covering early Wells-Fargo history, and a poetry piece by Harold Willard Gleason titled "Graves in the Desert."
